Fabio Sabatini – a brief bio and Grand Tour palmarès

The 2011 Tour de France Lanterne Rouge winner Fabio Sabatini was born on 18 February 1985 in Pescia, in the Italian province of Pestoia. A ‘rouleur-sprinter’, he signed his first professional contract with Milram in 2006 and moved to the Italian Liquigas team in 2009. He’s ridden nine Grand Tours, finishing seven, and has several stage placing to his name.

2003

  • Winner, Italian under-19 time trial championship (16th in World Championship junior men’s TT)

2005

  • 16th, Mediterranean Games road race
  • Winner, Coppa Città di Asti (under-23 race that’s also been won by Franco Pellizotti, Oscar Gatto and Tony Martin)

2006

  • Signs first professional contract with Milram

2007

  • Spring Classics and first Grand Tours (see below)

2008

2009

  • Signs for Liquigas (now Liquigas-Cannondale)
  • A 2nd and two 3rds in stages of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya

2010

  • 3rd, Gran Premio della Costa Etruschi

Giro d’Italia:

  • 2007: retired, stage 14
  • 2008: retired, stage 13
  • 2010: 2nd, stage 10; 3rd, stage 2; finished 101st
  • 2011: 104th

Vuelta a España:

  • 2007: 131st
  • 2008: 102nd
  • 2009: 2nd, stage 2; finished 115th

Tour de France:

  • 2009: 147th
  • 2011: 167th, Lanterne Rouge

Sabatini doesn’t seem to have a personal website, though there’s a Facebook page for him with, typically, virtually no information. Congratulations, Fabio – you done good, son.
